Post-stroke rehabilitation
From being unable to stand unaided, to moving with confidence around their home, we’ve been working with one long-term patient to overcome their fear of falling.
After suffering from a stroke, Carl* was using a four-wheel walker to move around his home and was unable to stand without support. Carl was struggling to complete everyday tasks such as washing up and brushing his teeth, afraid of falling over without his walker.
Goal setting
During an initial consultation with our physiotherapist, we set one goal for Carl:
to improve balance, and to regain confidence and ability to walk following a stroke
Outcome
We are very pleased to report that Carl has now progressed from using a four-wheel walker to using walking sticks to move around his home – and is also now working towards using one single walking stick instead of two. Now that Carl is able to move with more ease around his home, his confidence in completing household tasks that require standing without holding a support has greatly increased, meaning that Carl is now able to lead a more independent and functional life.
Independence at home
Parkinson’s patient Jacqueline* is one of our long-standing patients. Initially, Jacqueline was having one session with our physiotherapist per week, and two sessions with our rehabilitation trainer per week, with the goal of improving her mobility and slowing down the degenerative effects of Parkinson’s disease.
Unfortunately, Jacqueline was admitted to a care facility for two weeks but was released after her condition stabilised. Following this, Jacqueline had to have a live-in carer move in, and an additional carer was necessary to move Jacqueline around the house (e.g. from her bed to her chair).
Having previously seen the progress that Jaqueline was making while working with us, her family opted to continue with the care and support that we were providing, moving to three one-to-one sessions with our rehabilitation trainer per week.
Goal setting
One of the concerns that we had for Jacqueline was the potential of falls in the home, and Jacqueline was also at risk of being moved into a care home full-time. We re-evaluated her original goal and decided to move forward with a new one:
Reduce the risk of falls and improve mobility in order to remain independent at home
Outcome
After several weeks of one-to-one sessions, Jacqueline has reported a significant improvement in her confidence to move around her house using her four-wheel walker. Jacqueline no longer requires two carers to move her around her home, and now no longer needs physical support from her carer when it comes to tasks such as walking to the toilet and brushing her teeth.
Frailty and falls
We’re working with one senior patient to improve their balance and change their gait with a view to reducing the risk of falls in their home.
Sarah* unfortunately suffered from a number of falls in recent years due to symptoms of general deconditioning and ongoing frailty; everyday activities such as standing up from a chair have proven to be both time-consuming and challenging for her. Sarah has been house-bound as she is only able to move around with the support of a three-wheel walker. While using the walker, Sarah has had difficulty in picking up her feet while walking and is struggling with being in a bent-over position.
Goal setting
Goal: to improve balance, and to regain confidence and ability to walk
After an initial consultation during which we identified Sarah’s key goal, we developed her personalised treatment plan. Her plan included two one-to-one sessions per week with our rehabilitation trainer, Lee, as well as a series of safe exercises that she could practise independently.
Outcome
Having worked with Sarah twice a week for over three months, we have seen significant improvement – so much so that we are now only needing to see Sarah once a week.
Sarah’s gait has developed so that she is now no longer scuffing her feet and is able to lift her foot sufficiently to walk with ease. Not only has the time it takes for Sarah to stand up from a chair reduced, but she is also now able to balance on a single leg without support!
Having gained more confidence in her ability to walk and balance, Sarah has now ordered a four-wheel walker for outdoor use – so we can look forward to working and walking with Sarah in her garden this summer.
