Ever wondered what it’s like to work in physiotherapy? For the Abbey Mobile Physio team, each session is tailored around specific clients, their goals and their homes, so our days are exciting and diverse! Rehabilitation Trainer Kristina is here to take us along on an average day in her life.

Getting Off to the Right Start

Before seeing her first patient, Kristina’s mornings are all about family. “I make sure my children are up and ready for school and college, then drop my son off to catch the school bus. I will then normally walk the dog and go home to get ready for work”.

Hello Oxford: The Overview of a Day

“Generally I arrive at my first patient’s house at 9am,” continues Kristina, who helps cover the Oxford area for Abbey Mobile Physio. “All of my current patients have 45 minute sessions, so I will plan my day around seeing people who live in the same area of Oxford and try to minimise travel time between patients.” On average, our rehabilitation trainers can see 5 patients a day!

At Abbey Mobile Physio, we try to build consistent relationships by ensuring patients see the same rehabilitation trainer for each of their sessions. “I see some patients once or twice a week, but have in the past seen people three times a week. Where it’s not possible for our diaries to fit the same patient multiple times a week, we may then cover each other’s patients within the team.”

What Happens in a Session

Each home visit involves more than just following exercises, here are Kristina’s focus areas:

Hands performing a deep tissue massage on a person's back. Blue towel draped near neck. Calm indoor setting, gentle lighting.
  • Check in with the patient’s goals and progress

  • Observe movement and posture

  • Adapt exercises based on how they’re feeling that day

“I am constantly making sure patients are safe, listening and observing,” Kristina reminds us of the care that goes into each person. “I also carry a small kit with equipment like resistance bands, light weights, and a step, which helps people progress safely and effectively.”

Real life doesn’t always run to plan — traffic, parking or unexpected delays all add to the challenge — but every session is focused on quality care and helping people move better.

Keeping Things Personal: Notes, Planning and Admin

Saying goodbye to patients doesn’t mean the work is done! “I will then go home to do ‘work house-keeping’”, says Kristina. This can look like:

  • Writing up notes for each patient

  • Checking and adapting her calendar

  • Sending emails and making calls

  • Updating home exercise programmes via the Abbey Mobile Physio app

  • Planning sessions for the next day

Keeping our work so personal requires lots of reflection, making sure we’re constantly adapting to each patient’s needs as they change. This portion of the day ensures you’re never getting cookie cutter sessions, each day is planned around you!

Outside of Abbey Mobile Physio

Kristina’s days end as they began, with her family as the focus. “My evenings are filled with washing PE kits and uniforms, food shopping, cooking dinner and playing taxi driver for all of my kids’ clubs! We always eat together and prioritise catching up.”

Outside of work, Kristina is passionate about exercising, having run three marathons, and supporting the rest of her family. “I visit my sister, see my elderly mother and take my brother who has brain damage and learning disabilities to his appointments.”
